The Rocket Bookcase

This was a mammoth task - much more than I initially anticipated. The rocket bookcase has 52 individually crafted wooden parts - nearly all with some complication of a bevel, chamfer, mortise, tenon, compound curve, kerf cut, acute or obtuse angle. Over 50 countersunk and concealed screws, multiple solder joints for lights, adjustable shelving, soft-close hinges, adjustable footpads, nearly 20 thin coats of primer, enamel paint, and polycrylic for years of durability.

“This rocket is not meant to fly into space, but rather my son’s imagination.”

I started out with some initial sketches inspired by what I will call mid-century futuristic space optimism. I took a lot of inspiration from the 1950s space art of Chesley Bonestell, whose iconic image of Saturn rising over Titan is hanging in the nursery. The goal was to keep the design a little more whimsical than serious. I wanted more of a Buck Rogers, Werner Von Braun XR-1, or Disneyland Moonliner vibe. These examples were not functional rockets, but rather showpieces meant to inspire or educate the public. I want Ryan‘s imagination to be opened by a world of literature and knowledge. This rocket is not meant to fly into space, but rather my son’s imagination.

After making numerous scale drawings with a ruler, set of calipers, and a pencil things were starting to take shape. There are many techniques I had to learn to fill in the gaps of my woodworking knowledge. I had to build a few tools to do things like cut perfect circles - one of the many projects within a project.

My father and grandfather had both dabbled a bit with furniture building at some point in the past. Although I had not done anything with woodworking in about 20 years I wanted to honor this little family tradition with both of them passing earlier this year. I hope that one day I can work on a few projects with my son helping me in the shop like I was able to do with my dad.

These images document my process over the past 3 months of design, construction, and finishing. I’m happy enough with the end result and hope that my son will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed building it!

iPhone X vs DSLR Long Exposure Photography

In this video I head down to Rutledge Falls to test out the new long exposure mode on iOS 11 with the new iPhone X.

How does Apple's latest attempt at using software to overcome hardware limitations compare with a professional DSLR camera? Let's find out together!

The images from the iPhone X do not have any post-processing applied to them aside from using the long exposure mode. The DSLR shots were processed using Lightroom/Photoshop. Slow motion footage was also shot on the iPhone X in the new 240fps/1080 mode.

These are some of the shots with the DSLR:

These before/after images were taken with the iPhone X with a tripod in the default camera app. No post-processing was done to them aside from using the Long Exposure mode.

A few things on using this mode:

1. You can shoot with HDR enabled with live photos, but it will not work when you use the Long Exposure mode. This can result in blown out highlights depending on your subject matter.

2. Even if you shoot with a tripod the Long Exposure effect will still slightly crop your image. I assume this is part of the software auto-aligning the duration of the live photo to process the long shutter effect.

3. Just like with the portrait mode, the masks that iOS creates for objects is not perfect. Upon close inspection of things like the rocks in these photos you can see some artifacts appearing where the effect was erroneously applied to areas that were not moving.

Kayaking and Waterfalls in McMinnville

I grew up in Florida where one of my favorite hobbies was kayaking. I do not currently own one, but I am thinking about getting back into it eventually. I had a good friend of mine invite me out to his dad's land in McMinnville to go kayaking over the weekend if the storms cleared up. Fortunately for us, they did.

It didn't take long on the river to reach this cool little waterfall. The biggest challenge was finding a place to safely unload my equipment without spilling it everywhere in the river. Dry bags were a huge help in keeping everything safely stowed in the kayak and also while standing under the waterfall.

Canon 5D MKIII | 16-35 f/2.8L III @ 16mm | f/16 | Bracketed | ISO L(50) | Quantaray 82mm Circular Polarizer

After shooting the wide composition, I switched lenses to the 70-200 to shoot a tight detail shot of the moss and water flowing through it. I wanted to balance blurring the water and keeping the greenery sharp and opted to use a 3 stop neutral density filter instead.

Just before heading down the river I pulled out my iPhone 7 Plus and shot this photo of the waterfall using RAW capture in Lightroom Mobile. Editing was done on the desktop versions of Lightroom and Photoshop though to take full advantage of the .DNG file.

iPhone 7 Plus | Wide Lens 3.99mm | f/1.8 | 1/150 second | ISO 20 | Lightroom Mobile .DNG RAW

Fortunately we had decided to head back in before we knew that a huge storm was about to hit us. I don't know if I can recall a faster moving storm, not 10 minutes before this shot was hastily taken with my iPhone I was lamenting the blue sky there and was wanting a moody sky to place behind that lonely tree. I got my wish, and a little wet too.

Northrup Falls

My wife and I spent part of our Saturday afternoon hiking down to a waterfall in Colditz Cove State Natural Area that I had wanted to visit for some time.

Once I had found my composition there were only a few intermittent clouds in the sky. I had just a few moments of cloud cover to take the main shot of the falls. The cloud cover created beautifully soft light to make what I believe is a more pleasing image in this case.

Canon 5D MKIII | 16-35 f/2.8L III @ 30mm | f/16 | 1 second | ISO L(50) | Quantaray 82mm Circular Polarizer

Canon 5D MKIII | 16-35 f/2.8L III @ 30mm | f/16 | 1 second | ISO L(50) | Quantaray 82mm Circular Polarizer

With my wide shot of the entire 63' waterfall in the can it was time to hike down to the base of the falls for a few detail shots. The spray was intense and made it difficult to capture a clean shot. I would usually go a little longer on shutter duration to smooth out the water even more, but I found that the 4 second shutter I chose was pushing the limits before the front of the lens was completely coated with water. This is one of the primary reasons I stick to my weather sealed lenses when shooting this type of work. My best weather sealed glass is the 16-35 f/2.8L III and the 70-200 f/2.8L II IS (both of which were used in this trip). I also brought but did not use my 24-105 f/4L IS. That lens is not as well sealed as the ones that due to the construction of the lens where the barrel pushes out when zooming. Not used on this trip, but another fantastically sealed lens worthy of mention is my beloved 35 f/1.4L II.

Canon 5D MKIII | 16-35 f/2.8L III @ 24mm | f/16 | 4 seconds | ISO L(50) | Quantaray 82mm Circular Polarizer

Canon 5D MKIII | 16-35 f/2.8L III @ 24mm | f/16 | 4 seconds | ISO L(50) | Quantaray 82mm Circular Polarizer

I wanted one more shot of the falls before hiking back out and was going for something more abstract. I think that the higher volume of water through the falls makes for a superior wide shot, but can make detail shots more difficult. Too much water and not enough rock can make the shot lack contrast. Contrast not just in tonality, but also between the juxtaposition of smooth water and the sharp textures of the rocks underneath.

The greater working distance of the longer and more compressed focal length still did not help much with the spray coming off the falls, especially when the wind kicked up. I was able to push my exposure up to 5 seconds, but still had to wipe the polarizer down on the front of the lens after every shot.

Canon 5D MKIII | 70-200 f/2.8L IS II @ 102mm | f/16 | 5 seconds | ISO L(50) | B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC

Canon 5D MKIII | 70-200 f/2.8L IS II @ 102mm | f/16 | 5 seconds | ISO L(50) | B+W 77mm Circular Polarizer MRC

Many thanks to my incredibly supportive and loving wife Emily. She means the world to me and I love it when she comes out on these hiking adventures! Thank you for stopping by and reading the blog today. Until next time, good luck and happy shooting.

Big South Fork - Twin Arches Backpacking Trip Day 1

Day 1:

I had an incredible time during my first visit to Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area! There was so much to see and do, so I had to limit my trip to just one area that looked interesting in my research before the trip. I decided to hike down to the Twin Arches area of the park, then down to a nearby creek and do some back country camping. The following morning I hiked through the rest of the loop, back up into some amazing areas of the park with huge rock formations.

Afternoon Hike at Radnor Lake

I finally had part of the afternoon off from other shoots, so naturally, I decide to go on another shoot! I've been going to Radnor Lake for years now. It's no secret to native Nashvillians that this is one of the premiere birding and wildlife sanctuaries in Tennessee.

Despite living so close to this amazing place, I don't go to this place as often as I should for two main reasons:

1. Too many rules! I understand there is a reason for them, and that the rules are part of what keep this area so beautiful despite the crowds. The problem for me is that I go out in nature to be free and experience nature. You're pretty much confined to just taking the paths. This often makes landscape photography frustrating for me, as I need freedom to search for the right compositions.

2. Parking. If the weather is decent you can almost count on there being a line running down Otter Creek Rd just to find a parking space. It's a lot of extra hassle when the point of the trip is to get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Don't get me wrong! There are a few spectacular landscapes to be had there. One of my favorite landscapes of 2016 "Moonrise Over Radnor" was shot here.

Where Radnor truly shines is in the watchable wildlife department. It's an absolutely remarkable place if you're into hobbies of the ornithological persuasion. Namely birdwatching and bird photography (birding). Radnor is home to many species, with plenty of migratory birds dropping in throughout the seasons. These shots are mostly from my last trip, with a few other shots from several other recent trips there.

The limited trail access can sometimes force a little extra creativity upon you. While I don't see this shot winning any awards, I still thought it was an unusual way to present this Great Blue Heron in the late afternoon sunlight.

Since it's spring time, I'm also always on the lookout for some great macro opportunities with flowers. These tiny purple flowers were all over a grassy area underneath a thick forest canopy of mature trees.

Flooded Tree - A quick afternoon photography excursion

It's been a long time coming, but I've finally decided to start a photography blog and vlog to document some of my adventures! I wanted to start off with something small before going into larger projects that I have planned. When I drove past this tree on my way home, I immediately knew there was a shot to be had there.
